Elgar approaches Yoga as a whole and complete system towards Well Being. With consistent practice of Yoga Asana we can look and feel better physically, heal ourselves on many levels and eventually master challenging poses creating confidence in ourselves and empowering us in our everyday lives: these are great “benefits” of Yoga Asana or the “effects” of consistent and intelligent practice.
Yoga for me was a natural fit once I understood that it wasn’t only all about a bunch of poses. I came to Yoga from life changing accident that left me with physical injuries, which Western Medicine could not completely fix.
At the age of 21 I was involved in an accident that left me with numerous broken bones and fractures throughout my entire body. Recovery was a painful process with Osteoarthritis and Osteochondrosis making me in many ways immobile. There was so little Western Medicine could do in terms of treatment that didn’t involve heavy surgery and medication, so I embarked on my own path, a path with no clear directions, I just went in search of healing, understanding and answers.
Before my accident and before Yoga, I was an athlete, competing in the sport of Wrestling, where I saw some success and competed in several high profile national tournaments and winning several medals at the national level. With hopes to potentially try for the United States Olympic qualifiers, the accident removed this as a possibility for me.
With wrestling no more in my life and unbearable physical pain, my desire to heal became the most powerful force in my life, taking me to any part of the world where the possibility to heal existed. The path brought me to India and to Yoga.
In Yoga, I discovered the timeless and ancient science of healing, living and of inner transformation. Yoga connected me to my body’s own ability to self heal, and it reconnected me to my Self and the existence that we all share. It gave me a renewed purpose in life. From this first experience in India, I have continued to study and teach, where my teaching emphasizes the therapeutic and healing aspects of Yoga. Today, I live without the physical pain and trauma of the past, my is capable of movement and activities that I was told I would never again do.
This is only part of what is possible. Yoga is designed to address the totality of our Health, through Body-Mind-Emotion and Energy, eventually learning to master our life energies, becoming masterful in living, creating our own Joy, Happiness, being who we choose to be, being fully life expressed and making conscious choices that take our life energies exactly where we want them to go.
